October Presidents Message

Dear ASHRAE Atlanta Chapter Members,

The ASHRAE year is off to a great start and we still have a lot of good things in store for the coming months!

My name is Mark Dahir, I am an Application Consultant at Mingledorff’s, and I will be your Chapter President for the year 2025 - 2026. I have been an ASHRAE member since 2007 and Atlanta Chapter member since 2008. I have served as the Refrigeration Chair for several years and have also served on the Board of Governors for the chapter. I look forward to leading the way for the chapter this year and I anticipate a plethora of opportunities to keep our members engaged!

We had very good attendance for our October chapter meeting. Kirk Phipps came to Atlanta to talk to us about hydronic balancing. He presented some terrific content, and the room was very engaged in the discussion. I hope we can keep this kind of participation going at future meetings.

The next chapter meeting will be November 11th from 6:00 – 8:30 pm at Maggiano’s Cumberland Mall. There is a cocktail hour with light appetizers to start, followed by dinner and a presentation by Dr. Richard Simmons on the Carbon Neutral Energy Solutions (CNES) Lab at Georgia Tech. I hope to see you all there! We also have the Fall Sporting Clays Tournament on November 14th at Cherokee Rose. Teams are already sold out, but we do have sponsorships available including major station sponsors which would allow you to set up a booth on one of the shooting stations to connect with customers and colleagues from the industry! There is also the ASHRAE Winter Meeting and AHR Expo approaching. It will be held from January 31 – February 4 in Las Vegas, and there will be numerous technical sessions for PDHs. If you have never been to one, there is a massive expo where manufacturers can show off their latest technology, loads of fun events hosted by vendors, and it’s a great opportunity for networking. Please check out the link in the newsletter for more information.

You are all welcome to reach out to me directly with any feedback or questions you may have. The chapter is here to serve every one of our more than 900 members, and the participation and feedback of our membership is crucial to our success. We have some terrific topics lined up for our chapter meetings this year, but we are always open to suggestions for what you might find interesting and important. I can also help you get involved if you want to volunteer for the Atlanta chapter.

Thank you for supporting ASHRAE and the Atlanta Chapter!

Mark Dahir, PE

"Healthy Buildings: Designing for Life."

Bill McQuade, P.E., CDP, Fellow ASHRAE, LEED AP, will serve as the 2025-26 Society president. In his inaugural presidential address, McQuade introduced the theme for the 2025-26 Society Year, “Healthy Buildings: Designing For Life.” The theme emphasizes the critical role of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in reducing environmental impacts to the built environment while supporting healthier, more resilient communities.

“Today, shelter is more than just a roof over one’s head,” said McQuade. “Shelter encompasses the hospitals we are born in, the homes where we find comfort, the schools where we learn, and the buildings we work in. A well-designed shelter prioritizes indoor environmental quality, ensuring good air quality, proper lighting, thermal comfort, acoustics and access to safe water, all essential for health and comfort. Providing safe, stable, and sustainable shelter is not just a basic human need, it is a fundamental pillar of societal advancement and long-term development.”
