FEBRUARY 2024 ASHRAE ATLANTA CHAPTER MEETING

Keeping Doc's Cool, Dry and Happy in the OR... Can I do it With What I've Got?

Tuesday, February 13th, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Technical Program Description

Many times, healthcare facility professionals have “inherited” older HVAC systems which were installed in their hospital at the time of its original construction. These systems may be incapable of delivering the critical level of environmental control necessary in today’s ever demanding patient care model. This technical session will give these professionals a fundamental understanding of the basic principles that must be considered in order to properly control their hospital operating room (OR). It will establish how temperature and humidity interact to create a satisfying and productive healthcare environment and provide information to assist the healthcare facility professional in analyzing a hospital OR when troubleshooting the space due to problems. Various HVAC retrofit scenarios to remedy ailing OR’s will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the fundamentals of various HVAC system types serving hospital OR’s, including traditional chilled-water, DX split systems, low-temp glycol chillers, and both solid-and-liquid desiccant dehumidification units.
  • Learn how minimum code and compliance requirements for temperature and relative humidly align within the real-world operational capabilities of legacy HVAC systems installed in many existing hospital facilities.
  • Recognize the limitation of traditional HVAC systems delivering 42°F CWT, and why they may “miss the mark” when trying to produce the desired OR environment.
